IAN  FARMER

B.S., M.S.,  Ph.D., D. Eng., P.E.

 

Dr. Ian Farmer is a world-renown authority in mining and geotechnical engineering. He has served as founder and chairman of Ian Farmer Associates, Ltd. a full-service engineering firm with offices and laboratories throughout the United Kingdom and Wales, since 1983. His specialties include rock mechanics, geotechnics, engineering geology, and fluid flow in rocks. He has competence in underground and surface mine planning and design. Dr. Farmer is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Society for Rock Mechanics, The International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Dr. Farmer is a First Class Certificate of Competency (Mines and Quarries Act UK) 1960, Chartered Engineer (UK), and Professional Engineer (Arizona) No 17790. Dr. Farmer is a former member of the WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Geotechnical Panel on the Effective Life of Rooms in Panel 1, formed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the DOE/WIPP in 1991.

Dr. Farmer started his distinguished profession as an Underground Mining Engineer for the National Coal Board. This was followed by lectureships at the University of Wales, Cardiff and the University of Durham and a readership at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Dr. Farmer was the former Department Head of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona from 1987- 1990. Since 1990, he has served as an Adjunct Faculty Member of the University of Arizona. Since 1996, Dr. Farmer has been a Visiting Professor at the Department of Mining Engineering at Leeds University.

Dr. Farmer is the author and co-author of over 100 papers to journals and conferences on rock mechanics, strata control, geotechnics, tunneling, and mine design. He is co-author with P. B. Attewell of the standard work “Principles of Engineering Geology”. Dr. Farmer is also the author of “Engineering Behavior of Rocks andCoal Mine Structures”, and co-author ofFluid Flow in Discontinuous Rocks”. He is also a co-editor of "Rock Mechanics: Proceedings of the 28th U.S. Symposium".

Dr. Farmer holds a Ph.D. of Mining Engineering and a Doctor of Engineering of Civil Engineering from University of Sheffield.
